Does it matter to you if a person in a role of authority male or female? Many Americans still believe that in some cases one sex or the other is a better fit for some careers. In a study conducted by the Pew Research Center looking at gender roles both men and women preferred their elementary school teacher to be female and their police officers to be male.
In other careers that are traditionally held by one sex or the others, peoples have little preference whether the worker is male or female. When asked about bankers, surgeons, lawyers, airline pilots and family doctors, approximately half of the respondents said gender made no difference.
